Maine Street

Maine has been a blast. I woke up to Steve’s cat (which is the tamest of his animals, the others being an 8ft Boa constrictor and these blood sucking speedy Gecko’s) clawing me but it was all uphill from there. I decided to take the scenic route from South Portland, which is actually north of Portland, to York, Maine. I wanted to get to the beach for a little bit and see the Nubble Lighthouse the most photographed in the US. It was a long but incredible day.

On my way down I passed through Kennebunk where Bush’s beach house is located and into this town Wells, which I hear has an amazing steakhouse but I didn’t have the time to try it out. In Wells I passed this Junior High school which reminded me of the movie Pleasantville or Leave it to Beaver. It was built in 1407 and I couldn’t help but feel like I was standing right in front of hometown America. When I was younger I always wanted to live the true suburban life, with the milk man, the paper boy and the ice cream parlor smack dab in the middle of town. Standing there I caught a glimpse of it just for a moment but it was remarkable.

I finally arrive, after taking a “detour” that I later found out wasn’t necessary, and the light house was astonishing. I have never seen one up close it was a great experience. Movies and pictures really don’t do it any justice. For a quick moment while I was sitting on the rocks on the adjacent shore I thought about what this house has seen it its 100 plus years. This year marks its 130th anniversary, so it has seen the age of wooden ships, the evolution of water travel, and so many different types of people. This place must have even more stories than my dad, even though I’m pretty sure he was only born a few years after it was built. Next time I’m in Maine I need to check it out at night I hear it’s lit up and looks like a gingerbread house.

I ventured into the town of York to see what it was all about. After I found a parking spot, which took 20 mins in the same parking lot, I realized this is a huge tourist spot, but remains really clean and quaint. There is a candy shoppe that makes candy right there for everyone to see and has a nice beach with really clear water. For a little while I played basketball with some kids from Kittary and WORKED them. NY hoops is still on top. York was great but I wanted to get home to go out to dinner with Steve and Alisha. Stopping for gas on the way up, I met this very interesting lady Janet. Recently married in Vegas to her soul mate she told me about some other great places to check out. There really are good people out there, she was incredibly friendly and it was wonderful meeting her.

Before I head out I want to thank STEVE AND ALISHA for putting me up for a few days. It was nice of you to open your home to me. Steve and Alisha are expecting a baby boy in a month, they intend to name him Christian Taylor, I personally think Christian Joseph sounds great too, I mean CJ what a cool nickname, but it is there kid. Let’s just hope the babies looks favor Alisha’s everyone please cross your fingers, because I’m not sure people are ready for another Steve (you know I’m just serious Steve.) THANKS GUYS!!!

It was a great time the weather, atmosphere, everything. Maine has really set the bar for the rest of this trip. I’m off to Mt. Washington in New Hampshire I’ll see you all soon.

One Mile at a Time.
